Who Should Not Move To Costa Rica?

A friend of mine forwarded me an interesting article on who should not live in Costa Rica written by Christopher Howard. About two weeks ago I took a road trip that was destined for disaster with a colleague of mine (Tim Baker). Oddly enough the two most unlikely characters saved our day and went way beyond the call of duty to haul us out of a swampy field so we could make our appointments in San Jose. Please read the article and then ponder my thoughts at the end!

Who Should Not Move To Costa Rica?

After helping thousands of Americans and Canadians move to Costa Rica over the last thirty years through my books and monthly retirement and relocation tours, I have observed who are the best candidates for living successfully in the country.

Don’t move to Costa Rica if….
(1) you expect everything to be like the U.S.
(2) you think the locals should change and do everything like we do.
(3) you don’t like warm weather or rain.
(4) you have breathing problems due to high altitudes or have allergies
(5) you expect to every product from the United States.
(6) you are insensitive to the local culture.
(7) you a smart ass, self-righteous and know-it-all “Ugly American.”
(8) you are going to refuse to use Spanish and think the locals should speak English.
(9) you are running away from the law in the U.S. You will be found sooner or later.
(10) you want to get rich overnight.
(11) you want to find a Latina woman for a low price tag and exploit her or if you have serious problems with the opposite sex.
(12) you want to avoid paying taxes.
(13) you want to work illegally under the table here.
(14) you don’t want to go through the process of obtaining residency.
(14) you want free medical care.
(15) you want scam people.
(16) you have a serious drug or alcohol problem.
(17) you expect all of your emotional baggage and problems to go away just because you move here.
(18) you are smarter than the locals and can beat the system.
(19) you think you can become an expert on the country overnight.
(20) you think it is easy to set up a business.
(21) you can’t stand your fellow Americans. We have more and more coming here every day.
(22) you think you are the savor of the locals and will civilize them. You should leave the Second Coming of Columbus Syndrome at home.
(23) you are type of person who will give foreigners a bad name.
(24) you think a younger woman will be attracted for your good looks and not your money.
(25) you feel just because you are an American you should be entitled to something.
(26) you have no sense of humor.
(27) you don’t want to experience the country’s culture and people.
(28) you don’t have a sense of adventure.
(29) you don’t realize you are guest here.
(30) both you and your spouse don’t see eye to eye about moving here.
(31) you really don’t have enough money to live here.
(32) have no goals.
(33) don’t want to affiliate with groups like clubs, church groups, volunteer etc.
(34) suffer from the “hammock syndrome” with nothing to do. You’ll end up tipping the bottle and get real bored quickly.
(35) are a negative person who likes to complain about everything and everyone.
(36) you have never traveled or lived abroad.

Only a couple of weeks ago I had a guest in the hotel tell me, "If you want to die of stress live in the U.S. and if you want to die of frustration live in Costa Rica!"

Well put... my choice is I will continue with mild frustrations and short moments of anxiety as this is the place I grew up learning to live life more and more! Costa Rica is the place I keep coming home to.

MONKEY BAR Update...USA vs. Canada!!!

Who says Canadians take their ice hockey too seriously!!!!!!

A lone unsuspecting US ice hockey fan who strayed into the Monkey Bar during the Gold Medal Ice hockey final in Vancouver and found himself out numbered by a group of Canadian guests was, for once in his life, left speechless when the Canadians netted the golden goal in the last seconds of overtime.

Ahead of the game, local resident and friend James displayed the cigar he was planning to smoke after the game in celebration of the imminent US victory, the whereabouts of the cigar are still unknown……………..

Best Superbowl Party in Guancaste, Costa Rica

OPEN LETTER TO MINISTRA DE TRANSPORTE:

Dear Mrs. Gonzalez,

Yesterday was a sad afternoon for the entire community in Flamingo and Reserva Conchal. A 12 yr old girl rode her rented Quadra cycle (4 wheeler) off a cliff to her death! Today the community continues to feel saddened and ask why and how could this happen? Some of us ask how it was that she was even allowed to ride on one in the first place! She came down from the U.S.A. with her friends and family to enjoy a holiday! Mrs. Gonzalez, I urge you to consider a few things from the perspective of a hotel manager living in Guanacaste.

Last night after hearing of the tragedy I ran into a language student (Andrew Bama) who told me of his weekend trip back from Limon. His rental car was stopped six times, two times of which they were asked to get out of the car and were physically searched, including his wallet! He said that there was not one police checkpoint along the way back that did not stop them. He is a university student over here for a couple of weeks and vows never to drive in Costa Rica again! What were the traffic police really looking for? Again, he was stopped six times! WHY?

On my way back from Tamarindo last night I passed two young girls on another Quadra cycle without helmets and then I passed another two young girls on a scooter without helmets! I also passed several bicycles without lights or even reflectors. Last night I tossed and turned trying to sleep as I recalled you on channel 7 several months ago introducing two gentlemen on TV. One was from England and the other was from France and you were so proud to introduce them as witnesses to the stricter traffic laws similar to the ones in Europe and the ones that have recently passed here! In Europe cyclists without reflectors would be fined (given a “Multa”), besides that they would have wider roads along with proper lighting and maybe even side walks! Wake up Mrs. Gonzalez, we are not in Europe! As in much of the legislation that passes here it is “over-kill” on one end and complete negligence on the other!

I feel that the new traffic laws here verges on the absurd and now with the new points system, we will open a Pandora’s box! Yet again, a 12 year old can ride a deadly vehicle to her death! No one should have to receive a call like that from a friend regarding a fatality regarding the death of a child on holiday!

And finally what really gets me stirred up is everyone in the tourism industry keeps talks about “Turismo Sostenible” (Sustainable Tourism). How about a crack down on the real problems mentioned above and the ones we all witness daily out here…lets just call it “Tourismo Responsable!” (Responsible Tourism!)

I implore you to reconsider your new laws and work on laws that focus on realistic regulations on all vehicles especially after the sad and unnecessary loss of life of an innocent 12 years old tourist.

Flamingo Coast Guard Commander Makes A Young Mans Dream Come True

Once in awhile there comes along a feel good story that gives off that special warm fuzzy feeling. When it comes to members of this town, it makes me feel especially proud to live here and continue to want to be a part of this tiny community! While the rest of you are out there watching America's Got Talent, we have got a story that residents of this town performed without asking for their 15 minutes of fame or even for the sake of money!

"(6/13/09) Last Saturday, we made a dream come true for a paralyzed 16-year-old boy. Juan Pablo Royas is a very intelligent young man from San Jose who is confined to an electric wheelchair. He prepares his studies by use of a mouth stick on a special laptop received from the President Oscar Arias for his achievement as a student.

Juan Pablo’s dream is for once in his life to be on the ocean on a boat. Since Monica Bolanos is his aunt, Gregory Fleurbaey of the BB Lodge in Potrero took care of the lodging. Captain Bruce Bennett from the Ale Watcher donated his boat for the whole day. The new commander of the Coast Guard, Major Lisandro Mendez Melendez, authorized the Ale Watcher to come into the Flamingo Marina in order to let Juan Pablo and his heavy electric wheelchair board the boat. The Coast Guard welcomed him as a special guest by giving him a Coast Guard cap. Six of the Coast Guard personnel carried him onboard assisted by Captain Bruce and crew member Danny Sabot.

The cruise went to the Catalina Islands, Sombrero Islands and along the beautiful coastline of Potrero and Flamingo. Juan Pablo was very happy and asked for a little more speed on the way in. Captain Bruce opened the throttles. Upon arrival to the marina, the Commander and his officers were waiting to assist Juan Pablo and his electric wheelchair off the boat. Juan Pablo was extremely pleased with the cruise and thanked everyone in different languages.
A special thanks to Major Lisandro and his men, Captain Bruce Bennett of the Ale Watcher, and Gregory Fleurbaey and his family from the BB Lodge to make this dream come true for this extraordinary young man."

Flamingo Bite (Fishing) Report!

Been a while since last time we chatted and for me it was an almost honeymoon (short stint in Panama) and well lots to report! Fishing has been consistently good... Here is what Captain Richard & Captain Victor have to say....

"Hey Folks’

Here is what’s been happening lately with the fishing . Out front you can fish all day and see 25 to 30 free jumping sails and sailfish fining on the surface . Very few are coming in the baits for the bite but they are there . Maybe they are breading and when they get done with that they will be extra hungry . We are going further north and raising 15 to 20 sails a day with an occasional marlin bite . A few wahoo and tuna are showing up as well .

July 1st - Peter Hughes and David Daniels from England fished all day raising 14 sails with 11 bites ,catching and releasing 7 . They also caught 4 dorados ,releasing one and keeping three for dinner .

June 24th – Mark and Brooks Bailey and their friends from Saint Augustine , Florida surfed in the morning and fished long enough to catch a 40lb wahoo , a 35lb tuna and they had 3 chances at sailfish but couldn’t hang on to them .

June 23rd – Sally Dare and her crew fished a Half day at the Catalina Islands catching a 30lb rooster fish along with a mixed bag of bonitos , jacks , needle fish and mackerals .

June 21st – Frank Delatore and his friend Patty from Ft. Meyers ,Fl. raised 4 sailfish , releasing 2 of them . They also caught a 50 plus lbs Dorado .

June 18th – Luther Penny and his friends Darrel , Allen and Beth from North Carolina went fly fishing for sailfish . They raised 10 sails , had 4 bites , releasing 2 of them .

June 17th – The newly wedded couple Austin and Brooks fished a half day at the Catalina Islands catching 10 bonitas , a wahoo , a big jack , some blue runners for live bait and a hand full of makerals .

Dive Report & Bite Report 1st week June!

This week the Northern Pacific Coast of Guanacaste we saw heavy afternoon showers, but along with the well needed rains came great dive reports along with great bite reports! Interestingly enough I thought I would add that Gamefisher II wrote in the following report, "The action has been a little sporadic due to warmer than normal sea temperatures but the fish are there !" Now after reading the following I would add to the report....."The fish are here waiting for you!"

June 1st 2009...
Dixie: Captain Eladio Rodriguez reported 2 Sailfish released and 12 Dorados (Mahi Mahi)

June 3rd 2009...
Funfisher I: Dive Master Ralph reported phenomenal water temperature of 86 degree F (or for you European followers...30 degree Celsius). Dive Master Ralph did dives on the Catalina Islands. One dive on one of the big Cats and the other on Elephant Rock. On the two dives a total of 20 white tip reef sharks were sighted along with 2 spotted eagle rays! Visibility was good with a range of 40 to 60 feet! There were no thermoclines reported which made the dives even smoother if you went down in a shorty like I always do!
Navgator: Captain Victor with Kohlbrand from Florida fishing in the Papagayo area 35 miles North of Flamingo. 14 Sail Fish , 27 Dorados, 1 Amberjack. Check out these Sailfish they shot for our famous catch and release program!

June 4th 2009...
Gamefisher II: Full day of fishing with Tom Ghegan and co. from Atlanta raised 5 sails , releasing 3 of them.
Funfisher I: half day of sport fishing caught 6 big Dorados (Mahi Mahi) and one huge Yellowfin Tuna! These clients brought the fish back and had Head Chef's Antonio & Farid of the Monkey Bar prepare it al gusto!
Brindisi: with Captain Biaggio landed one Sailfish, 2 Dorados (Mahi Mahi), and tens of non keepers!

June 5th 2009...
Plautus: Captain Luis Antonio Ruiz reported 2 Wahoo and 10 Dorados (Mahi Mahi)
Navgator: Captain Victor fishing with Sam y Petros Bagdassarian from the U.S.A in the Northern Zone of Papagayo boated: 8 Sailfish, 17 Dorados & 1 lost but full Marlin.

June 6th, 7th, & 8th 2009...
Gamefisher II: 3 Full days of fishing
DAY 1 -The Ocean City Light Tackle Club raised 8 sails , releasing 2 , they also fought a blue marlin for two hours on 20 lb. test line that finally broke off.
DAY 2 –The Ocean City Light Tackle Club raised 6 sails only releasing one .The other 5 sails swam away well fed!
DAY 3 –The same group took a play day inshore fishing and caught the following variety of fish: 3 Mackerel, 1 Amberjack (about 55 lbs.) 1 Jack, 1 Dorado, 10 Skip Jacks, 8 Blue runners And 1 Pacific Barracuda

May 29th/30th 2009...

Ale Watcher:
On board with Captain Bruce fishing with his wife and her gang of amigas! They managed in a couple of days to boat 1 nice Dorado (Mahi Mahi), and tens Yellowfin Tunas!

The exact report came in as "Debbies Dorado and April's Tunas!"
That left us hanging with how much fish was really caught....Dagmar asked me?
My guess Dagmar wants to be invited over for some fresh Sushi soon!

One last thing for your readers and fish watchers, I promised my best friend and brother from another mother.....Captain Robert Hudson on board Camelot that I would post a report about fishing on the other side of the Pacific Ocean! Well, I guess it was not so bad either this week for you on Kona...."Smile! You got a nice little fishy Robert!" 164 Lbs. Gutted!!! Dagmar & I will be there soon after our honeymoon!

Flamingo Fishing Update II...Bite is really back and for real!

Dear Fishing Fans,

Last week I gave you a brief fishing report. Boy I was not kidding when I said the bite appeared to be back in Flamingo, Guanacaste!

In just four days of fishing here is what Gamefisher II had to report...

Day 1:
Hanson Group with South Fishing Tours out of Florida staying here at the Flamingo Marina Resort:
2 good sized Sailfish, 1 Striped Marlin, & a good eating 40 pound Mahi-mahi (Dorado) which the boys had their very own chef cook her at the monkey bar in three different ways...I was full and had to make up for it the next day in the gym!

Day 2:
Hanson Group again (This time all they wanted was eating fish!):
5 Tuna ranging from 20-40 pounds and three Mahi-mahi (the biggest was 25 pounds!)

Day 3:
Sammy Simmons family from Atlanta:
6 Sailfish, 7 Mahi-mahi (Dorado), and 1 Tuna!

Day 4:
Simmons Family:
1 Sailfish, 4 Mahi-mahi, and 2 good sized Tuna!

OK! I said it...Bite is on! So what you waiting for! This is my second week of getting reports and next week I will have a ton more!

For those of you boat captains please call in the report and I will gladly post your bite report and even where the clients ate and how they felt about it!

Obviously...Hanson boys will be back...they promised me...I said it was OK as long as they bring Chef Richard Masten into our kitchen to teach us local how they do it Florida style...bring it on boys!

Bite Report!

It finally looks as if the bite is back for the season here in Flamingo! Here is what I was able to get in just 15 minutes of talking with the guests from the Flamingo Marina Resort:

1. Last Saturday Captain Joe of the Rum Runner scored a whooper with releasing 3 Marlin and 6 Sailfish!

2. James C aboard the Gamefisher II with captain Junior Bustos raised 4 Sailfish & landed only one...give James the benefit of doubt, he was using circle hooks and setting the bill fish for himself! (For those of you amateurs out there...I couldn't have done better!)

3. Rumor has it Captain Bruce has been hitting it hard and landing quite a boat load for himself and his circle of friends. I am sure he is not going to give me his secret spot so easily...HEY BRUCE....see you happy hour at the Monkey Bar!!!!

4. Yesterday was hot! I mean the bite was on! Brindisi hooked up 32 Dorados (Mahi Mahi) in just four hours!

5. Yesterday on the sunset cruise for the "Flamingo Marina Resort Employee Outing" we caught just one Tuna in half an hour and the rest of the time was just fun, snorkeling, beers, spectacular sunset, good old fashion fun & FRESH SUSHI!!!

Creative Juices Got Me Flowing!

"I have got my creative juices flowing!" Yes, you heard me! They come from the Famous Monkey Bar here at the Flamingo Marina Resort (FMR):

1) At lunch time I tried the chefs newest hot sauce and well I got my juices flowing! He has made a new homemade hot sauce called the Crazy Monkey. He could not believe I had two tablespoons in my "Sopa de Mariscos!" (for you Gringo's that is Seafood Soup with a kick) I will point out, I then added only one teaspoon to my Beef Nachos!

He promises me the next and even hotter stuff tomorrow.... Insane Monkey Sauce!

2) HotelBeds.com just made a hotel site inspection with me...I asked them how was lunch? Nothing but "puro gustos" and rave reviews on both food and service! Regarding the property tour, well they loved the newly remodeled Captains Suite. "This Luxury Beach Condo has a woman's touch! I bet this gets rented out a lot!?" Yacky asked me (Yes I spelled her name right). In this case I will give the credit to Roxanna for her touch in decorating her condo! Thank you Roxanna you make my job easier!

3) In the Sporting world if you haven't been watching.......

i. Dallas Mavericks....They made it past the first round of the playoffs...Finally! I get to see them at least another couple of games this year. Dirk this could be your year!

ii. Live Boxing....We get to watch on Saturday Night Ricky Hatton versus Manny Pacquiao! Watch out Tim...we are not pulling for the Pommy!

iii. Oh yeah there is that race called The Kentucky Derby....something about seeing a horse getting whipped puts me off! Sorry Craig...you can have all the Mint Juleps you want...Bring on the slug fest! This is a real whipping....At 140 pounds these guys are going for blood!

Live boxing here Saturday at the Monkey Bar will be good!

For those of your who see this on Monday it will be too late for the boxing but not too late to try our sauces and just hang out! (Monkeys do hang out!)

Flamingo Marina Resorts first blog attempt!

Welcome to Flamingo Marina Resort’s first blog!

The purpose of this blog is to bring friends, fans, family, & condo owners regular updates on happenings at the Flamingo Marina Resort and the local area. My virgin blogging days started in the early development days at the Iguana Golf & Beach Resort.

In my past, I found that many Iguana owners and followers enjoyed updates once a month or so and even what seemed the least bit trivial or negative news had a huge impact on our blog following. Yes I once posted a blog in Iguana showing waterspouts and even one time about a snake. To date no one has lost a condo from the watery tornadoes and no one has received a fatally venomous bite in Iguana. We may have lost a sale from the harmless Boa picture being posted, and the waterspouts showed our survival days during the rainy season.

What to expect? Apart from regular Flamingo updates, you will be able to hear about events and specials at the Monkey Bar. I may throw in a rerun on the delicate marina topic that will be better than a lost episode of “Friends.” Finally I will from time to another give a blog from the travel agents' or tour operators' perspective… as in a local dive or fishing report.

Few future keystrokes for you to remember… FMR = Flamingo Marina Resort , HI = Hacienda Iguana , MB = Monkey Bar , SJO = San Jose , LIR = Liberia Airport International in Guanacaste , MGA = Managua , Tico = Costa Rican Citizen or Costa Rican thingy (as if to say, “My Tico cellular is….”) , Nica = Nicaraguan Citizen or thingy from Nicaragua , LMAO = Laughing My Butt Off!

So my promise to you is to give you the news and updates as I see it. Otherwise you may just want to stay at home and read La Nacion (which claims to be the #1 selling Tico newspaper) or watch Fox News (which claims to be the fairest and most balanced news show) and then you may feel like the roads will never ever get repaired or the economy never ever will recover to the “Good Old Days!” The roads eventually do get re-built and yes even the economy will inevitably recover. Funnily enough we will survive and remember these to be “Good Old Days” once again!

Now three words to Flamingo, as once said in the famous and classic Poltergeist Movie….”I am baaack!”

Monkey Bar Super Bowl Bash Weekend!

Come one come all we said...and boy did they come from all over!

This was the 10th annual Monkey Bar Superbowl Bash....Who said a down ward economy would stop our locals and even friends from as far North as Alaska and as far South as South Africa! Now this year we did not boast the numbers of last year, but we still broke over 120 guest for the Sunday Bash.

This year we did is a bit more...We hosted a Pre-Super Bowl bash! While decided on not to bring in Britney (although El Wormo wore glasses that he got off her) or Wing Nut to do our Saturday music Jazz fest we had our own home grown "Viva La Vi!"
